K-9 Police Dog – “Chase”, a Black Labrador Retriever, was donated to the Riviera Beach Police Department for the purpose of implementing gun detection services. However, since that time, Canine Chase has not been fully trained, and currently there is not a handler assigned to Canine Chase.
Since the time of that donation, the Riviera Beach Police Department has partnered with Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), which has a fully trained gun detection dog assigned to this region. Further, the Riviera Beach Police Department has a Task Force Officer assigned to the ATF, which provides for access to the Gun Detection Dog, as well as other resources. The City of West Palm Beach also has a Gun Detection Dog that may be utilized through mutual aid. To this end, it is no longer necessary or feasible to continue to train Canine Chase or train a Police Officer/Handler for this purpose.
Traditionally, Police Officers have been given the first right of opportunity to adopt retired animals. Accordingly, Police Officer Cherise Phillips is requesting permission to adopt Chase.
