February is observed as "Black History Month" in America. Its precursor, "Negro History Week," was created by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926 and observed on the second week of February. Woodson chose that week in that month to honor the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Today, Black History Month not only celebrates these remarkable figures, who have made tremendous strides to improve the lives of African Americans, but it is also a celebration of various other individuals. Individuals that have contributed immensely towards all facets of our society. Furthermore, it especially recognizes those that have paved the way to obtain and maintain civil rights and bridge the gap of divide that so plagued this nation in times past.
Therefore, The City of Riviera Beach joins other countries around the world, including our great nation, to honor and celebrate Black History Month during the month of February.
