The Parks and Recreation Department is aggressive in bringing amatuer athletic events to the City. Amatuer sports is a good economic driver, provides positive activity in the City and exposes the City in a positive light.
The department has partnered with Cross Fit Wild, a Riviera Beach Cross Fit gym to assist with Wodamania. In the crossfit community the workout of the day (WOD) is a series of exercises that competitors complete for time. In the case of a competition (Wodamania) it is a several series of exercises that competitors complete for time over the course of the day.
This will be the 5th year for Wodamania but the first at the beach. There is one other competition in Florida that is at the beach and that is in Miami. In past events at the Cross Fit Wild facility there have been competitors from New York, Pennsylvania, Missouri and several other states.
There are an anticipated 400 athletes that will compete over the course of the day (November 3, 2018)
Staff and organizers have met with Ocean Mall management and restaurants to gain their buy in. The Hilton Singer Island and Marriott will be host hotels. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission has endorsed the event and is working with organizers to enhance the experience.
The event will not be serving any food or drink the day of event, that business will be driven to the merchants at the Mall. The organizers will host an after party after the event with the merchants of the mall.
Staff is requesting 1) Authorize Parks and Recreation to waive fees for use of municipal beach for Wodamania and 2) Authorize the closure of Ocean Avenue east of the Ocean Mall from 6am Saturday November 3, 2018 until 8 pm Saturday November 3, 2018 to provide safe access to and from the mall and the competition and to provide an area for vendors such as apparel and equipment to set up for the day.
The organizers will provide a certificate of insurance listing the City as additionally insured and the organizers will hire Riviera Beach Police details for the day.
