In 1992 former Councilperson Hyacinthia Becton presented the need for establishing an Education Advisory Committee in an effort to address unfair treatment of students and schools within the city’s boundaries by the Palm Beach County School Board.
At its May 6, 1992 City Council Meeting, the sitting board voted unanimously to establish the Riviera Beach Education Advisory Committee with the active education advocates, from throughout the county, being its board members
In addition to staffing the scholarship program and being the think tank for the Academic Summer Camp, some of their accomplishments include: facilitating Town Hall Meetings that aided in preventing school closures in Riviera Beach; numerous occasions where members advocated for the rights of children from Riviera Beach; one of the founding organizations of the Coalition for Black Student Achievement (CBSA); listed as one of the authors of "Achievement Matters for All" in the School District's Academic Business Plan; one member chaired the CBSA for two years; lobbied the School Board and successfully obtained the first Preference SAC designation in the County for Magnet Programs (Suncoast High School); assisted many parents in getting their child admitted into Suncoast High School's Magnet Programs; advocated for and served on search committees to facilitate assignment of compatible principals to city schools; one member chaired the School District's Compliance Monitoring Committee assisting the School District in developing a plan to obtain release from U. S. Department of Justice Oversight; represented the City as a member of Pam Beach Gardens High School Magnet Advisory Committee; one member has chaired the School District's Advisory Boundary Committee (ABC) for over 10 years; another member has served on the ABC for over 10 years; and advised Mayor and City Council and sought their involvement in education focused initiatives and issues affecting the City.
