USD has purchased chlorine gas from Allied Universal Corp. for many years from the South East Florida Cooperative Contract Award No. 863-11695. USD requires a new allocation for chlorine. Estimated use include approximately five (5) 1-ton cylinders a week and approximately ten (10) 150-lb cylinders every two (2) weeks.
The purchasing market for chlorine cylinders is very limited in South Florida. Allied Universal has been designated by the South Florida CO-OP as the source of supply. The Utility District uses cylinders to secure the chlorine as compared to larger utilities which require rail car distribution of chlorine. Special handling of the cylinders is critical as any leak of chlorine gas could result in a hazardous condition in the community.
